GroFutures: Groundwater futures in Sub-Saharan Africa

Duration : July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014
Overview:

GroFutures is working with government water ministries in Africa to conduct pilot studies characterising and quantifying changes in groundwater demand under a range of potential development scenarios. Anticipated changes in groundwater supply (recharge) will also be evaluated by examining relationships between climate and groundwater recharge in semi-arid and seasonally humid environments where long-term observational records exist. A key innovation of the research is the piloting of a new metric of water availability that explicitly incorporates groundwater resources. Further, since access to groundwater often disfavours poor water users, GroFutures will investigate pathways to enhance the governance and management of groundwater that recognise and support access of the poor to groundwater.
