- Call for research proposal
The Bale Eco-Region (BER) is located in the southeastern Ethiopia harbor stunning landscapes and globally important biodiversity with a range of endemic and endangered species. However, this globally important ecosystem is under increasing threat from a growing human population. livestock
Deforestation and forest degradation is occurring due to the conversion of natural habitat to farmland, overgrazing by livestock and unsustainable fuel wood and timber extraction. This, coupled with impacts from climate change, is increasing the vulnerability of both lowland and highland communities that depend on the BER’s ecosystem services.
Against this backdrop, five partner institutions; i.e Farm Africa, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), SOS Sahel Ethiopia, Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and Population Health and Environment Ethiopia Consortium (PHEEC) supported by the European Union’s SHARE (Supporting Horn of Africa Resilience) are implementing a project entitled “Conservation of Biodiversity and Ecosystems Functions and Improved Well-being of Highland and Lowland Communities within the Bale Eco region”. The specific objective of the project is Conservation of Biodiversity and Ecosystems Functions and Improved well-being of Highland and Lowland Communities within the Bale Eco-region (BER).
The project has a large research component which is led by IWMI with a major focus on building capacity, knowledge and understanding of biophysical and socio-economic dynamics in relation to natural resource use. The research component has set out a number of inter-related research studies that aim to build better knowledge and understanding of sustainable eco-regional management practices including socio-economics. Research evidence generated from studies on the trade-offs and optimal allocation of development assistance, for example of incorporating family planning, will be crucial to inform both the Government of Ethiopia and development actors efforts to secure human livelihoods in Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa.
